Hello! My name is Matt, and I started laser engraving in 2019 as a freshman at the University of Tennessee. I discovered that our engineering department had a makers lab with a laser in it that was free to use for students! I created my first designs in Inkscape and engraved them on a few wooden coasters from Hobby Lobby that I then passed out to friends in my dorm. Shortly after that, I created a page on Etsy and made my first sale for one of the coasters! I bought my own laser once we were sent home from college for Covid and have had a thriving small business ever since.

Currently, I work full-time as a mechanical engineer in the Knoxville area and run Beam on the side with the help of my wife, Ashley! From one of my products going viral in Spain to making custom ornaments as a Christmas gift for a private jet company to making 600 bookmarks as a gift to volunteers for my church’s kids ministry, this adventure has gone further than I could have ever imagined!
